UP Man Allegedly Forced To Lick Own Spit By Cops For "Creating Chaos"

A village head's representative in Nasirabad area here was allegedly forced to lick his spit by the local police for "creating chaos" during a 'nautanki' programme organised without permission from the authorities, officials said on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police (Raebareli) Yashveer Singh said the allegations are being investigated by the additional superintendent of police and action will be taken based on his report.

Sushil Sharma, the representative of the head of Kapurpur village in Nasirabad, organised a 'Nautanki' programme without permission on October 30, Mr Singh said in a statement.

During the programme, he and his associates misbehaved with the people and created chaos under the influence of alcohol. The accused also misbehaved with a police team from the local police station after which five people, including Sharma, were taken into custody, it said.

Mr Sharma, however, said the police team reached the village late at night and asked him to stop the nautanki programme.

Sharma claimed that he and four others were detained and physically assaulted at the local police station while he was made to lick his spit.

He also accused Nasirabad SHO Shivakant Pandey of demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from him.

Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Panchayati Raj Gram Pradhan Sangathan on Saturday lodged a written complaint with the SP, demanding action.

Rohit 'Quashes' Ashwin's Suggestion On Ravindra Jadeja. Then This Happens

Whenever India play a Test match at home, the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin   play a crucial role in determining the result thof the match. If they both strike together, more often than not India emerge as the winner. If India go on to win the third India vs New Zealand Test, Jadeja and Ashwin will be credited a lot. In the first innings, Jadeja took five wickets while he has taken four in the second essay. Ashwin has so far taken three wickets in the second innings. 

On the second day, an interesting thing happened regarding change of bowling ends. In the final session, Ashwin went up to India skipper Rohit Sharma to suggest Jadeja be bowled from the other end. Sharma did not accept the request initially but then Jadeja was brought in from the other end and  he took the wickets of Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell. This was the same end from which the left-arm spinner took a fifer in the first innings.

Murali Kartik and Simon Doull, who were doing commentary, talked about it on air. 

"In between overs, Ashwin went up to Rohit, asking his captain to change the end Ravindra Jadeja is bowling from. Rohit immediately quashed it," said Murali Kartik.

"Jadeja is getting decent purchase from the end he is bowling from," he added.

However, the ends were changed a little later and Jadeja scalped Mitchell and Blundell.

Meanwhile, though his team was just 143 runs ahead with only one wicket in hand at the end of day two, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel said they still have a chance of winning the third Test against India if they manage to score a few more runs and put the home batters in pressure in the fourth innings as the pitch is offering turn and variable bounce from both ends.

Patel, who claimed 5-103 to help his team bowl out India for 263 in the first innings after Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant had hammered 96 runs in quick time in the morning, restricting their lead to just 28 runs, was at the crease batting on seven New Zealand were reduced to 171/9 in their second innings.

"It's going to have to be whatever we score. We're going to have to try and do our best to restrict India and try and bowl them out, but it'll be interesting to see how the wicket continues to play tomorrow as well.

"The morning sessions have been a bit different to the afternoon sessions, so if the wicket continues to play like that, if we bowl well and do our best, I think we might have a decent chance," said Patel at the end of the second day's play on Saturday.

"How's Shaw Going?" Australian Coach Takes Subtle Dig At India Star

Well-known Australian batting coach Neil D'Costa has cited Prithvi Shaw's decline in international cricket as a cautionary example, urging Australian selectors not to "rush" 19-year-old sensation Sam Konstas into Test cricket for the blockbuster series against India. He says Konstas isn't ready for the traditional five-day format yet, joining the debate around who would partner Usman Khawaja at the top in the five-match rubber against their fierce rivals from the sub-continent.

D'Costa, who was born to Anglo-Indian parents hailing from Chennai, has in the past coached Michael Clarke, the late Phillip Hughes, and helped Mitchell Starc switch to fast bowling from wicket-keeping.

The 53-year-old D'Costa has also worked on Konstas' batting in the past but the young New South Welshman is now coached by Tahmid Islam, an ex-Bangladesh first-class player, and former Australian star Shane Watson.

He reckons handing Konstas Test debut now would do him more harm than good.

"He could be a good player for 100 Tests. If they put him in now, he might only play 10 Tests," D'Costa, who is now Marnus Labuschagne's coach, was quoted as saying by 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

Konstas, Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft among others are looking to get into the Australian XI as Khawaja's opening partner in the series against India.

The series starts on November 22 in Perth.

D'Costa said, "He's (Konstas) another player who has shown great potential but let him play two years of Sheffield Shield," D'Costa said.

"Let him understand the grounds (in Australia), understand the flows (of the game), understand himself and understand the game. If he's good enough, he will get the runs, and he'll be in (the team in) a little bit.

"It's just ridiculous (talk of rushing him in). How's Prithvi Shaw going? I could see his weaknesses before he went in."

After successive Sheffield Shield hundreds for NSW against South Australia last month, Konstas' name was thrown up as a potential replacement for David Warner. The teenager then made 2 and 43 against Victoria before a duck and 16 for Australia A against India A in Mackay.

D'Costa, who started coaching aged 19, is a Level 3 coach with degrees in Sports Science, Sports Coaching and Psychology.

He has also worked as the Vidharbha Cricket Association's Residential Academy head coach.

Woman Strips At Iran University To Protest Strict Dress Code: Reports

A young woman stripped to her underwear at an Iranian university on Saturday in an apparent protest against the country's strict Islamic dress code, according to online videos and media reports.

A video posted on social media showed security guards at a branch of the Islamic Azad University detaining the unidentified woman. University spokesperson Amir Mahjob said on X that "at the police station,...it was found that she was under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder".

But some social media users suggested the woman's action was a deliberate protest.

"For most women, being ...in their underwear in public is one of their worst nightmares, ... This is a reaction to the (authorities') stupid insistence on the mandatory hijab," Lei La, a user on X, said in a comment accompanying the video.

The fate of the woman was not known but the mass-circulation daily Hamshahri said on its website: "An informed source said...the perpetrator of this act has severe mental problems and, after investigations, she will most likely be transferred to a mental hospital."

Growing numbers of women have defied authorities by discarding their veils after nationwide protests that followed the death in September 2022 of a young Iranian Kurdish woman in the custody of the morality police for allegedly violating hijab rules. Security forces violently put down the revolt.

"Not A One Way Street": KKR CEO Drops Hint On Reason Behind Shreyas Decision

Venky Mysore, the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), admitted that it was a very challenging task for them to trim the retentions down to six ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction after winning the previous season. KKR have made their top retention pick in middle-order batter Rinku Singh (INR 13 crore) followed by Andre Russell (INR 12 crore), Sunil Narine (INR 12 crore), Varun Chakaravarthy (INR 12 crore), and uncapped duo of Harshit Rana (INR 4 crore), and Ramandeep Singh (INR 4 crore).

It meant KKR had to let go of their title-winning skipper Shreyas Iyer, Mitchell Starc, Phil Salt, Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana. “The no brainers would have been maybe 10 or 11 players, but trying to trim that down to six was very challenging, because it's about the players that you have built an equation with and who have done fantastic for KKR.

“Sunil has been with us for 12 years while Andre has been with us for 10 years. Varun has been associated with KKR for a long time, since 2019 and Rinku as well has been with for a significant amount of time, since 2018. Harshit has been with the team for three years while Ramandeep came in last year and really made a big impact.”

“So I think it's a good combination. And at the same time, some of the thinking around how you want to handle the auction also came into play, but we thought that this was a really good combination for us. And, obviously leaving out some of the players is never easy,” said Mysore in a statement issued by the franchise.

Process of retention

He also talked about the process of conversations they had with the players before finalising their retention picks. “First and foremost, I think our approach has always been to maintain transparency and have proper conversations with everyone. I've not really had conversations with the six we have retained, but I have engaged in conversations with the ones we couldn't retain.”

“But obviously I am aware of some of the narratives that have been going around. It's sufficient to say that, we always engage in talks with everyone and most people understand our position. In almost all cases, everyone asks if there is a way we can retain them, but they also understand why we can't, and hopefully, somewhere our paths will cross again.”

“But also, something to be kept in mind is that retention is not a one way street. It is always something that has to be mutually agreed upon. So, sometimes mutual agreements happen but we also have to be respectful of the fact that a player may choose to go the other way, And, it's a little tough when that situation happens, but that happens.”

With KKR having a purse of INR 51 crore, Mysore also talked how the mega auction would be a different scenario for them. “The nature of the rules this year is that it will be challenging for everyone in different ways. In our case, after retaining 6 players we go into the auction with 51 crores and no RTMs (Right-To-Match Card).”

“But then there may be some other team who retains none or very few, and they come in with more money. But their challenge is to build a squad, a full squad. Our challenge will be to complete our squad, so each one will come with their own strategies, and everyone is very experienced. I've been part of 14 auctions with this being the 15th one, but it never ceases to surprise me.”

“So all we can do is say that this is what we have decided, this is the money that we are going in with and this is the kind of squad that we want to build and work very hard to prepare. I know that with the think tank and the support from the owners we will come up with a good plan, and we'll work through it.”

He signed off by throwing light on the involvement of support staff, especially after Gautam Gambhir, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate left to join the Indian team. “They have been involved significantly as this is a collective thought process and collective decisions. I think DJ has been terrific, very engaged, as has Chandu (Chandrakant Pandit), along with Bharathi Arun, Carl Crowe and our analyst Nathan Leamon.”

“The think tank has been very engaged and very strong in the discussions. I've been very fortunate that there's a group there that knows exactly what they're doing, lots of experience there and looking back at what has worked for us and how we continue to maintain that continuity, there will be change, but there's also continuity. So, let's hope that we can, we can do a good job with the auction as well.”

China To Allow Visa-Free Entry To Citizens From 9 More Countries

China will extend visa-free entry to citizens from nine additional countries, including South Korea, Norway and Finland, the foreign ministry said on Friday.

Starting November 8, nationals from these countries, which also include Slovakia, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco and Liechtenstein, will be allowed to enter China for business, tourism, family visits, or transit for up to 15 days without a visa, the ministry said.

The policy will be in effect through December 31, 2025.

Gaza Cancer Patients Face Struggles In Jordan Amid Conflict: Report

For the past year, the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in exchanges of fire alongside the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, recent weeks have seen a significant escalation in hostilities. The continuous heavy shelling and artillery battles have severely disrupted medical facilities in the region.

According to The New York Times, more than 10,000 cancer patients still require immediate assistance, even though more than 4,000 patients have fled Gaza for medical treatment since the start of the conflict.

While undergoing therapy in Jordan, patients struggle with emotions of guilt and homesickness. Mohammed, a patient who was given a Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis in January 2023, went with his mother, Maha, who insisted on taking the family with them.

At the King Hussein Cancer Centre in Amman, the number of patients from Gaza has increased significantly. Patients live in a hotel nearby, fostering a sense of community. However, uncertainty looms over their futures as many fear returning to a devastated Gaza.

Hussam Shehadeh, another patient, reflects on his separation from his family in Gaza, expressing worries about their safety and his own health. Similarly, 13-year-old Mohammed Abdel Hadi faces emotional challenges after leaving his family behind. He locked himself in his room until a call from his mother persuaded him to continue treatment. As patients navigate their illnesses and the trauma of conflict, many hope to return to Gaza once the war ends, according to an NYT report.
