BJP Veteran LK Advani Admitted To Hospital Again, Kept Under Observation

Veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday night, sources said.

This comes days after the 96-year-old former deputy prime minister was discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after a night-long stay there.

"LK Advani is stable and under observation. He has been admitted under Dr Vinit Suri, senior consultant, Neurology," a hospital source said, adding that he was admitted around 9 pm.

The details of Mr Advani's ailment were not known immediately.

Outside Hathras Hospital, Scattered Bodies, Loud Wails After Stampede

Bodies lay scattered at a medical centre in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district on Tuesday as people milled around them, wiping away tears and consoling one another.

The heartbreaking scenes unfolded outside the district's Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre, where victims, dead or unconscious, of the stampede that occurred at a 'satsang' in Phulrai village, were brought in ambulances, trucks and cars.

A woman sat crying among five or six bodies in a truck, urging people to help her get the body of her daughter out of the vehicle. A video clip showed a man and a woman lying lifeless in a different vehicle.

Many of the injured were seen lying near the entrance of the local government hospital surrounded by anxious relatives. Locals blamed the administration's negligence for the tragedy.

As the hours went by, the official estimate of the fatalities jumped and the crowds outside the trauma centre and the mortuary swelled.

According to a senior district official, 116 people, mostly women, are believed killed in the stampede and several more injured.

"There are almost 100-200 casualties and there was only one doctor at the hospital. There was no facility for oxygen. Some are still breathing but there are no proper treatment facilities," an agitated youth said outside the hospital.

Eyewitness Shakuntala Devi told PTI Videos that the stampede took place while people were leaving the venue at the end of the 'satsang'. "Outside, there was a road built on a height over a drain. People fell atop each other," she said.

The stampede apparently occurred due to overcrowding, the Sikandra Rao police station SHO said.

According to officials, the government has formed a team comprising the Agra additional director general of police and the divisional commissioner of Aligarh to probe the incident.

Speaking to media persons, District Magistrate Ashish Kumar said it was a private function for which the permission was granted by the sub-divisional magistrate. The local administration provided security outside the venue while the internal arrangement was to be looked after by the organisers, he added.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede and instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures. He announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

The Uttar Pradesh government said an FIR will be registered against the organisers of the programme.

Adityanath also directed the district administration to arrange for proper treatment of those injured and immediately take them to hospitals. He wished them a speedy recovery.

On CCTV, Speeding Bus Runs Over 6 Women In Uttarakhand, 1 Dead

A speeding bus ran over six women in Uttarakhand this evening. One of the women died on the spot. The bus seemed out of control as it hit the women in footage recorded by a nearby CCTV camera.

Three other women, who were also in the path of the bus, narrowly escaped being hit by the bus while a scooter approaching from the opposite side also managed to swerve just in time to avoid a collision, footage showed.

The women were waiting for autos on the Kashipur Road near Alliance flyover in Rudrapur when the bus rammed them from behind. The injured were rushed for treatment to the district hospital. One of the injured is critical, said officials.

"We received the information about the accident around 5 pm.We have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter. The body of the victim has been sent for postmortem, while medical teams are actively treating the other injured women," said said Manjunath TC, Senior Superintendent of Police, Udham Singh Nagar.

The yellow bus had a banner with St Mary's Senior Secondary School's name written on it, although authorities have yet to confirm its affiliation with any school. "The bus looked like a school bus in the video but we are not sure about it as of yet. But it was a private bus," he said.

Will Be Proud If We Get Ability To Take PM To Space: ISRO Chief

It will be a "very proud" moment for the entire nation if we can fly Prime Minister Narendra Modi to space, Dr S Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, has said.

However, he quickly added that he would wait for the much anticipated Gaganyaan Mission to be "ready, to be proven, to be qualified enough to do that."

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Dr Somanath noted that ISRO was at a "critical juncture" with Gaganyaan this year and had three important missions scheduled.

A few months ago, Prashanth Nair, Angad Prathap, Ajit Krishnan, and Shubhanshu Shukla were chosen as the four test pilots of the Indian Air Force for the Gaganyaan mission. The human space flight mission will launch a crew of up to three members into a Low Earth Orbit.

Dr Somanath said he was "limited by the availability of the trained astronaut whom I can put in front of the possible candidates for this mission." 

"Any other candidate, including VIPs, for such missions cannot be considered at this moment because it is a highly skilled and trained operation which requires many years and months of preparation, and I believe that will be the guiding spirit in this case," he stated.

Asked whether he would be happy to accommodate Prime Minister Modi if he decided to go, Dr Somanath said, "Of course, I'll be very happy to do that, but then that's not the point here. He has much more responsible jobs to do I believe. But this is one of the capabilities that we would like to develop, that's human spaceflight capability, which we are in the process of gaining."

So, does he prefer that the Indian Prime Minister fly on when the Gaganyaan is ready to take him on an Indian vehicle to space?

The ISRO chief replied, "You said it right. See whenever such a thing has to happen, the Head of the State has to fly to the International Space Station or a space station of that station, it must be on our vehicle and from our land. I think I should say that only. So, I would wait for the Gaganyaan to be ready, to be proven, to be qualified enough to do that."

He added, "All of us will be very proud. Not only me, the entire nation will be proud if we have that ability to confidently send such a state man to space."

While talking about a launch date, Dr Somanath said that the first test flight of the Gaganyaan is scheduled for the end of next year "if all goes well." 

"But everything depends on the progress we are going to make," he added.

India Saw 536 Heatwave Days This Summer, Highest Since 2010: Weather Office

India experienced 536 heatwave days this summer, the highest in 14 years, with the northwestern region recording its warmest June last month since 1901, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The country recorded 181 heatwave days in June, the highest after 177 days in 2010, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said at a virtual press conference.

"In 2024 summer, India experienced a total of 536 heatwave days, the highest after 2010 (578 days). In June, it experienced 181 heatwave days, surpassing 2010 (177 days)," he added.

Mohapatra said the monthly average maximum temperature in northwest India settled at 38.02 degrees Celsius, 1.96 degrees Celsius above normal. The average minimum temperature stood at 25.44 degrees Celsius, 1.35 degrees Celsius above normal.

Northwest India recorded a mean temperature of 31.73 degrees Celsius in June, 1.65 degrees Celsius above normal and the highest since 1901.

Northeast India recorded a 33-per cent rainfall deficit in June, which Mohapatra attributed to the sluggish advance of monsoon over the northern and eastern parts of the country due to a lack of weather systems.

"Only one low-pressure area developed towards the end of June. Normally, we get three low-pressure systems. The Madden-Julian Oscillation was not favourable and therefore, we could not get enhanced convection and low-pressure systems," he said.

The absence of active western disturbances, mainly during the June 10 to June 19 period, was also a reason for the longer dry spell and heatwave prevailing over northwest and central India.

Mohapatra said only three western disturbances, against a normal of four to five, were observed across north India (June 5-10, June 19-25 and June 26-28).

India recorded more than 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases and over 100 heat-related deaths in one of its hottest and longest heatwaves. The intense heat overwhelmed the water supply system and power grids, with Delhi grappling with a severe water crisis.

According to the IMD, around 40 per cent of the country recorded double the number of heatwave days than usual during the April-to-June period. Temperatures breached 50 degrees Celsius in parts of Rajasthan, with night-time temperatures hovering around 35 degrees Celsius at many places.

In Delhi, which logged 40 consecutive days of temperatures of above 40 degrees Celsius since May 13, there have been around 60 heat-related deaths this year, according to media reports.

The IMD had earlier predicted 10 to 20 heatwave days during the summer season against the normal of four to eight days.

In contrast, 20 to 38 heatwave days were recorded in different parts of east, north and central India, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Gujarat.

Pakistan Woman, Teen Daughter Bricked Into Wall Over Property Dispute

A distressing incident unfolded in Hyderabad where a woman and her teenage daughter were allegedly bricked into a wall by their relatives following a property dispute, according to a report by ARY News.

The incident took place in the Latifabad No 5 area, prompting swift action from police and concerned neighbours who broke down the wall to rescue the trapped victims. The woman said that her brother-in-law, identified as Suhail, along with his sons, had confined them inside a room before constructing a wall outside to seal them in.

The victim further accused Suhail of persistent harassment and claimed he also possessed critical documents pertaining to their house, ARY News reported.

Law enforcement promptly responded by registering a case against the accused, assuring the public of their commitment to apprehending those responsible. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Farrukh Linjar assured the public that legal proceedings were underway to hold accountable those who perpetrated such a heinous act of confinement.

On May 24, a tragic incident in the Chamkani area of Peshawar resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals due to a property dispute, according to police sources.

Authorities reported that the violence erupted when two factions engaged in gunfire, resulting in the fatalities. The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR), noting that the conflict had been ongoing between the groups for an extended period.

It is noteworthy that similar instances of violence stemming from personal animosity or land disputes have occurred in the past, ARY News reported.
