Hundreds Of People Break Into US Bakery After Crashing Car, Loot Cash

Over 100 people ransacked a bakery in California early Tuesday morning after a nearby illegal street takeover, New York Post reported. A street takeover is when a group of people gather at an intersection or parking lot to show off their cars and driving skills. 

According to The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred outside Ruben's Bakery & Mexican Food Inc., situated at 2701 N. Santa Fe Ave. During the street takeover, about 100 people broke into the bakery after a white car repeatedly backed into the front door, so they could get inside. 

Videos of the incident that have gone viral on social media show dozens of people ransacking the store, taking lottery tickets, food, cash, and merchandise, leaving behind a massive mess and considerable damage. Several looters attempted to conceal their identities by either wearing a masks or holding their hoods over their faces with their hands.

When deputies arrived, they saw multiple people fleeing from the scene. According to the owner, losses included nearly $20,000 in earnings from the New Year's Eve holiday weekend, as per CBS News.

Investigators said the group used a white Kia Soul to crash into the building. Sheriff's Department will conduct a follow-up with the registered owner of the car that was used to ram the bakery, to ascertain whether it had been stolen before the incident.

Compton residents say street takeovers are getting out of control.  "Law enforcement should have stopped them before it got out of control," one resident told FOX 11.

“When I walked in there and saw you had taken a car and pushed the door in, that was very disheartening for me. People are coming in and vandalizing, it's just scary,'' another resident told NBC Los Angeles.

Mayor Emma Sharif responded to these concerns, assuring that "We do hear them and that we are listening to them. We do understand their concerns. We are working diligently to address those concerns."

The American dream is all about upward mobility. Any US citizen, if they work hard, should be able to not only succeed but also rise above the station of their parents. The US has used this simple ideology to become one of the great power nations of the world, socially, economically and politically. This principle has also attracted countless immigrants who fled their countries to live the American dream. However, now with the ongoing economic crisis, rising costs, increased credit card debt and wealth disparity, many are asking what killed the "American dream". 

A post on Reddit titled "What killed the American dream?" has sparked a discussion among users. The post included a screenshot of another social media post that read, "Ordered pizza for my kids and my daughters math teacher is the person who delivered the pizza. This lady has a master's degree, makes less money than by dumb a** and has to deliver pizza to make ends meet. This aint the American dream they keep tryna sell us".

Reddit user FluentInFinance shared the post a few days back. Since then, it has garnered more than 31,000 upvotes. In the comments section users shared what they think killed the American dream. 

"Neoliberalism killed it. Shareholder primacy killed it. Lowering corporations taxes and legalizing stock buybacks," wrote one user. "Over consumption, access to easy debt (credit cards, car loans, etc) keeping up with the neighbors, and government involvement and interference in the economy and especially Higher education," commented another. 

"All depends on location. In my state teachers make 6 figures and all that I know live very comfortably," expressed a third user. "My neighbor is a teacher in one of the tougher areas of my city. He has 3 kids and his wife is a teacher too. He recently took a job at the airport too and they put him on the graveyard shift... so now he works overnight 3 days per week and then goes to teach. This country is broken," shared a fourth user.

Meanwhile, last year it was reported that the 'American dream' triggered a big crisis in New York. The quest for a better life and more opportunities has thousands of immigrants moving to the Big Apple. But at what cost? A housing crisis and a big burden on the administration.

New York City received 118,000 migrants since last year, over 60,000 of them housed in the city's shelter system. Most migrants came to New York from countries in South America and West Africa in hopes of safety, work and stability. But integrating them into a new city isn't an easy task - both for the migrants and the administration.

The migrant influx could cost $12 billion over three years, claimed Mayor Adams who has previously looked into housing migrants in parking lots and cruise ships.

"Achhe se bolo (speak nicely)," requested the truck driver to the top district official.

"Kya bol rahe ho jara dhyaan rakho. Kya karoge tum; Kya aukat hai tumhari (What are you saying. What will you do? What is your stature)," shot back the irate official at the meeting called to discuss the grievances of truckdrivers over the hit-and-run law that has sparked massive protests across the country.

"Yahi toh ladai hai ki hamari koi aukat nahi (This is the fight that we have no stature)," the driver, not backing down, told the officer.

The officer, Kishore Kanyal, Collector Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh, ended the conversation with "do not take law into your hands", and threw in a suggestion: "this is not how you fight".

"We have called you all to hear your grievances," he added further.

The video however, in internet speak, has gone viral.

Hours later, the officer issued a clarification, saying he did not intend to hurt anyone.

"In the meeting held today with the drivers and their organizations, when a person repeatedly asked about going to any level after January 3, Collector Kishore Kanyal said something in a harsh tone to pacify him. It was not said with the intention of hurting," his office posted on X.

The person was repeatedly standing up in the meeting and creating disruption in the discussion, said his office, adding that the intention was "not to hurt anyone".

"The Collector has made it clear that no one will be allowed to break law and order in the district. It is our responsibility to protect the public and we will not allow a law and order situation to arise under any circumstances. We will take strict action against those who break the law," it said further.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor too shared the video and took a swipe at the government.

Later in the day, the truckers' stir was called off as the Centre assured that it would consult stakeholders before implementing a contentious law against hit-and-run.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said the government has taken cognisance of the concerns of truckers regarding the provision of 10 years imprisonment and fine and held the detailed discussion with the representatives of the All India Motor Transport Congress.

Not Tenable At This Stage: Court Rejects 12-Year-old's Abortion Petition

The Kerala High Court has declined a plea requesting the termination of the pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl, allegedly in an incestual relationship with her minor brother. The court noted that the foetus, now at 34 weeks, is fully developed and preparing for life outside the womb.

The court stated that termination at this stage is not tenable, if not impossible, and the child must be allowed to be born through either a caesarean section or normal delivery, a decision left to medical experts.

The parents argued that childbirth would have severe consequences on the girl's physical and mental well-being.

In its December 22 order, the court allowed the petitioners to seek continuous assistance from doctors at the nearby Government Medical College.

After reaching 36 weeks of gestation, they can approach the Medical College Superintendent for evaluation by experts, who will then decide on the nature of delivery.

The court assured protection for the baby after birth, emphasising the girl's comfort with her parents until delivery.

The parents were directed to ensure the accused brother stays away from her, with competent authorities enforcing this directive.

The court emphasised maintaining the petitioners' anonymity throughout the process and thereafter.

Former Indian cricket team fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad conducted a Q&A session on his X (formerly known as Twitter) profile on Sunday and when asked about a prediction for 2024, he made a reference to the Ram temple that is under construction in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. When a follower asked what he thinks will happen in 2024, he wrote - "Mandir wahin banne waala hai (The temple is going to be made there)". It was a reference to the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22.

Earlier, Prasad summed up the Rohit Sharma-led side bitter-sweet 2023 in international cricket. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter),

Prasad pointed out how India dominated other teams during the recently concluded World Cup on home soil, but fell at the the final hurdle, losing the cup to Australia. Prasad also rued India's defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final to the same opponents.

It's been more than a decade since India last won an ICC trophy, and a fan asked Prasad whether the Indian team is the "new chokers of world cricket".

While highlighting India's back-to-back Test series wins in Australia, Prasad refused to give the team the "chokers" tag. However, with India's ICC title drought extending for a further year, Prasad feels there is something wrong with Indian cricket.

"Most Reliable": Ex-ISRO Chief On Satellite Launch To Study Black Holes

Lauding the launch of the PSLV-C58/XPOSAT mission which is scheduled for Monday, former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair on Sunday said that this rocket system has evolved as the most reliable and cost-effective one in the global scenario.

The mission is scheduled at 09:10 IST on Monday, the first day of the new calendar year 2024, at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Talking to ANI, Madhavan Nair said, "The new year 2024 will be a significant one as far as ISRO programmes are concerned. The 60th launch of PSLV will take place on this day. When we look back in history, we started this journey in 1993 and since then, most of the missions have been successfully completed. This rocket system has evolved as the most reliable and cost-effective one in the global scenario."

The former ISRO Chairman also congratulated the ISRO for the achievement of the Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 missions.

"On this occasion, I congratulate ISRO for the fantastic achievements it has achieved in 2023, including the significant Chandrayaan-3 mission on the South Pole of the Moon, the Aditya L1 mission and the commercial launch competing against the Space X competition," Mr Nair said.

XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite) is the first dedicated scientific satellite from ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The objectives of this to-be-launched mission are to measure the polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30 keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources through Thomson Scattering by the POLIX payload; to carry out long-term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic X-ray sources in the energy band 0.8-15keV by the XSPECT payload; and to carry out polarisation and spectroscopic measurements of X-ray emissions from cosmic sources by the POLIX and XSPECT payloads, respectively, in the common energy band.

The module houses 10 identified payloads, supplied by ISRO and IN-SPACe.

The scientific goals of the mission are to study the distribution of magnetic field, geometric anisotropies, alignment with respect to the line of sight, nature of accelerators in galactic cosmic X-Ray sources by measuring the degree of polarisation and its angle, structure and geometry of magnetic field of neutron stars, mechanism of X-Ray beaming and its relation with luminosity and mass of accretion rate of powered pulsars, and detailed understanding of galactic black hole binary sources, among others.

In a stellar display of prowess, India soared to new heights in 2023 with the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the moon and the launch of Aditya-L1, India's first solar mission.

These milestones not only secured India's standing in the global space economy but also fueled the engines for the private space sector in India.
