"Hopefully You Know...": WI Star Pokes Fun As Sanju Samson Poses With Bike

Sanju Samson is currently not part of India's ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. He was part of the squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. However, he was ruled out of the series after hurting his left knee while attempting to field a ball near the boundary rope during the first T20I on January 3. He has not played a competitive match since then. Recently, Samson posted a photo of himself with a bike on Instagram. West Indies star batter Shimron Hetmyer, who is Samson's teammate at Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals, was involved in a banter regarding the photo.

"Not a bad look for u @imsanjusamson … hopefully u no what to do with that machine," Hetmyer commented on the photo.

"@shetmyer hahaha Hettie…yeah and I know what to do with you next time we meet!!" Samson replied.

Recently, India head coach Rahul Dravid cited the examples of Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and KS Bharat from the current crop of players who fall in the category of true 'wicket-keeper batters'.

"We always looking for a wicketkeeper-batsman, there is no question about it. I think since there has been MS Dhoni, in white-ball cricket, the days of specialist wicketkeepers are gone unfortunately. We are lucky and we are fortunate that all of the guys who are in contention, even in this team you know whether it's Ishan Kishan or KS Bharat are both good batsmen and have done well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Bharat hasn't played but Ishan has obviously done well as a batsman," Dravid said in response to a query from a reporter in the presser.

Iran Jails Couple For Viral Dancing Video: Activists

An Iranian court has handed jail sentences of over 10 years each to a young couple who danced in front of one of Tehran's main landmarks in a video seen as a symbol of defiance against the regime, activists said on Tuesday.

Astiyazh Haghighi and her fiance Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, both in their early 20s, had been arrested in early November after a video went viral of them dancing romantically in front of the Azadi Tower in Tehran.

Haghighi did not wear a headscarf in defiance of the Islamic republic's strict rules for women, while women are also not allowed to dance in public in Iran, let alone with a man.

A revolutionary court in Tehran sentenced them each to 10 years and six months in prison, as well as bans on using the Internet and leaving Iran, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said.

The couple, who already had a following in Tehran as popular Instagram bloggers, were convicted of "encouraging corruption and public prostitution" as well as "gathering with the intention of disrupting national security", it added.

HRANA cited sources close to their families as saying they had been deprived of lawyers during the court proceedings while attempts to secure their release on bail have been rejected.

It said Haghighi is now in the notorious Qarchak prison for women outside Tehran, whose conditions are regularly condemned by activists.

Iranian authorities have clamped down severely on all forms of dissent since the death in September of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested for allegedly violating the headscarf rules, sparked protests that have turned into a movement against the regime.

At least 14,000 people have been arrested, according to the United Nations, ranging from prominent celebrities, journalists and lawyers to ordinary people who took to the streets.

The couple's video had been hailed as a symbol of the freedoms demanded by the protest movement, with Ahmadi at one moment lifting his partner in the air as her long hair flowed behind.

One of the main icons of the Iranian capital, the gigantic and futuristic Azadi (Freedom) Tower is a place of huge sensitivity.

It opened under the rule of the last shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in the early 1970s when it was known as the Shahyad (In Memory of the Shah) Tower.

It was renamed after the shah was ousted in 1979 with the creation of the Islamic republic. Its architect, a member of the Bahai faith which is not recognised in today's Iran, now lives in exile.

Budget 2023 To Set Foundation For Growth Amid Global Gloom: 10 Facts

  1. Predictably, India's middle class is looking for some form of income-tax relief. Though the tax slab wasn't changed and no new deduction was announced last year, inflation has eaten into people's earnings. They haven't seen a change in tax rate since 2017-18 and in tax slab since July 2014.
  2. Ms Sitharaman may be able to afford a balanced, not a populist, Budget since the general election is still a year and one more Union Budget away. Still, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP hoping to win a third consecutive term, massive welfare programmes for farmers and the rural population can't be ruled out.
  3. The Finance Ministry had been considering increasing the limit under 80C, which includes investment in life insurance, fixed deposit, bonds, housing and public provident fund. If this happens, it will encourage savings and help raise rainy day funds of people whose savings were eroded at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. The markets in India - Asia's third-biggest economy - will be closely watched when Ms Sitharaman begins her Budget speech at 11 am. Adani group companies led most of the fluctuations last week, but on Tuesday its Rs 20,000 crore follow-on share sale sailed through, bringing relief to the group that's facing allegations of fraud made by US-based short-seller Hindenburg.
  5. The Modi government may strengthen its "Make In India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" policies by giving financial benefits to manufacturers and suppliers who want to set up shop in the country. India has been advertising itself as an alternative to China in the global supply chain.
  6. The real estate sector, which nosedived during the pandemic, expects the centre to announce favourable schemes and tax breaks to improve its luck after a slow but surefooted revival last year. In 2019, the goods and services tax, or GST, council cut the tax rate on affordable houses from 8 per cent to 1 per cent. The sector expects similar announcements in this Budget too.
  7. Over half of India's population is under 30. For them, the focus would be on job security and reduced tax on products that they prefer to buy, such as electronic goods. Better terms for education loans and other forms of financial help for school and higher education will be keenly watched.
  8. The farm sector went through difficult times in 2022 due to global supply problems, unseasonal rains and floods, effects of climate change and the war in Ukraine. Ms Sitharaman would likely have something to cushion them from all these shocks. After all, farmers make for a large and influential voter base.
  9. Ms Sitharaman may pick up from where she left on "digital rupee", which was first announced in last year's Budget as a possible alternative to cryptocurrencies. Crypto trades have in recent times become wildly popular across the globe, albeit risky since there's exists a grey area of regulation. The Finance Minister may give a status update on "digital rupee".
  10. A Bloomberg brief of what to expect includes extension of long-term capital gains tax to immovable property and unlisted shares, compensation to oil retailers for selling fuel below market prices, cut in import taxes on gold to 10 per cent to rein in illegal shipments and increase in defence budget amid border tensions with China.

Parrot Owner Fined Rs 74 Lakh After Bird Injures Doctor In Taiwan

After a pet parrot wounded a doctor, a Taiwanese man was fined $91,350 (Rs 74 lakh) along with a two-month prison sentence, according to a report in the BBC. Dr Lin fractured his pelvis and dislocated his hip after a fall caused due to the bird.

As per Taiwan's Central News Agency, the macaw shocked the doctor after landing on his back and flapping its wings frantically.

The owner had brought the bird and another macaw for a jog close to where Dr Lin was running, according to testimony in court. Dr Lin also filed a civil claim for damages for his financial losses against the macaw's owner, Huang, as per the outlet.  He said in court that he spent a week in the hospital after suffering injuries and was unable to work for six months due to recovery including three months of special care.

The doctor in question is a plastic surgeon and needs to stand for long hours to perform surgery, therefore, the injury led to heavy financial loss. His lawyer said, "He can now walk, but if he stands for long periods, there is still numbness."

According to a media spokesperson for the Tainan District Court's administrative division, the case is "rare" and different from any that has been heard in a civil court in the previous decade.

As per the BBC, the court concluded that Huang's negligence led to Dr Lin's fall. The judge reportedly stated that the macaw's size, 40 cm tall with a 60 cm wing span meant that the owner of such a huge animal should have taken "protective measures."

Huang stated that he accepts the court's ruling but plans to appeal, claiming that macaws are not violent birds and that the payout is "too high."

ChatGPT Passes US Medical Licensing Exam, Elon Musk Says...

Ever since artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT debuted in November, it has been the hot topic for every conversation on the internet for its chatty mastery. People have been asking different things to ChatGPT in a playful and light manner to test the chatbot's capabilities and power. The tool has recently passed some prominent exams as well, including the US Medical licensing exam, a Wharton Business School exam for the final test of the MBA programme's operations management course and four University of Minnesota Law School exams in Constitutional Law.

Now, reacting to ChatGPT passing the US Medical Licensing Exam, Twitter CEO Elon Musk took a dig at the artificial intelligence chatbot. Mr Musk responded to a tweet, which informed about the chatbot's capabilities, and said, "I'm sure everything will be fine."

Notably, AI research company Open AI, in which Elon Musk and Microsoft have invested capital, created the chatbot ChatGPT. Anyone who uses the AI tool website can ask the chatbot a question on any topic and get a speedy, detailed response in paragraph form.

In the past few weeks, ChatGPT has demonstrated what it is capable of. The tool has written instant and complex essays, drafted marketing pitches, produced poems and jokes and even drafted a speech for a Congressman in the United States. However, there are also fears that AI could take over some human jobs.

But in one of its latest achievements, the AI tool even passed the US Medical Licensing exams. According to ABC News, in a pre-print study, the researchers explored the upper limits of the chatbot's capabilities. They said that ChatGPT achieved over 50 per cent in one of the most difficult standardised tests around: the US medical licensing exam (USMLE).

To test the programme's capability, researchers had it sit a mock, abbreviated version of the USMLE, which is required for any doctor to obtain a license to practice medicine in the United States. The researchers fed questions from previous exams to the AI tool and had the answers, ranging from open-ended written responses to multiple-choice, independently scored by two physician adjudicators. They also made sure that the answers to those questions weren't already in the dataset accessible by the chatbot when it had been trained.

The team noted that even though ChatGPT hadn't already seen the answers, it performed at or near the passing threshold for exams without any specialised training or reinforcement. The tool received more than 50 per cent across all examinations and approached the USMLE pass threshold of about 60 percent. "Therefore, ChatGPT is now comfortably within the passing range," the paper concluded.

"What's Your Problem?": Buttler, Rassie's Altercation Caught On Stump Mic

South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 lead over England in the three-match ODI series, after claiming a five-wicket win in the second ODI on Sunday. Asked to bat first, the visitors posted 342/7 in 50 overs after Jos Buttler and Harry Brook played top knocks of 94* and 80 respectively. However, the game completely turned upside down in the second innings when South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma smashed 109 off 102 balls as the hosts chased down the target with five wickets and five balls to spare. Apart from such a spectacular win, one moment which grabbed everyone's attention was the banter between Jos Buttler and Rassie van der Dussen that was caught on stump mic.

In the 19th over of South Africa's chase, a conversation between England skipper and wicketkeeper Buttler, Jos Buttler, and van der Dussen was captured on the stump mic. Buttler was heard saying, "I am trying to get to the ball” to which Dussen says “I saw”.

The conversation then got intense when Buttler said, "What's your problem Rassie. It's not all about you all the time. I am allowed to try and catch the ball”. Later, the umpire entered as a peacemaker and asked both players to calm down.

Coming to the match, Bavuma sent England in to bat, reasoning correctly that there could be early life in the pitch. England struggled initially, losing both openers inside the first seven overs, but prospered as batting conditions eased.

Harry Brook, playing in his second one-day international after being dismissed for naught in the first match on Friday, made 80 off 75 balls. Captain Jos Buttler hit an unbeaten 94 off 82 deliveries.

Moeen Ali was also in fine form for England, hitting 51 off 45 balls and sharing a fifth-wicket stand of 106 with Buttler.

There was a brief lull after Ali's dismissal but England scored 60 runs off the last four overs, with Sam Curran hitting three sixes in scoring 28.

Bavuma and Quinton de Kock made a fast start, putting on 77 for the first wicket in 12 overs. All the South African batsmen made contributions and the hosts were always up with or close to the required rate. David Miller hit 58 not out off 37 balls and finished the match with a six off Chris Woakes.

NASA Image Shows Mars Craters Looking Like A Teddy Bear

Scientists exploring the surface of the red planet, Mars, discovered a fragment of the rocky planet that was grinning back at them. The face of what appears to be an enormous Martian teddy bear, complete with two beady eyes, a button nose, and an upturned mouth, smiles at the camera of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in the image released by The University of Arizona on January 25.

The adorable picture was taken by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as it cruised roughly 251 kilometres above Mars.

The eyes of the teddy bear are the craters on the planet and the circular fracture pattern seen in the head could have been caused by the "settling of a deposit over a buried impact crater.

"This feature looks a bit like a bear's face. What is it really? There's a hill with a V-shaped collapse structure (the nose), two craters (the eyes), and a circular fracture pattern (the head). The circular fracture pattern might be due to the settling of a deposit over a buried impact crater. Maybe the nose is a volcanic or mud vent and the deposit could be lava or mudflows? Maybe just grin and bear it," reads a statement from the University of Arizona's High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera blog.

The popular "Star Trek" Starfleet logo was found on the surface of Mars by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in June 2019. A set of odd chevron symbols were photographed by the Orbiter on a Martian sand dune in the southeast Hellas Planitia region.

The team claims that wind, lava and dunes formed the shapes on the red planet. After an eruption, lava encircled the initial enormous crescent-shaped dunes, which solidified afterwards. The wind moved a lot of the sand as it passed over the dunes, and in the end, it produced "footprints," also known as "dune casts," that show the presence of dunes that were encircled by lava.

Ex Google Employee Found Out He Was Fired While Feeding Newborn At 2 AM

A former Google employee has revealed that he found out about his layoff at 2 am while he was feeding his newborn daughter. Nicholas Dufau said he felt "acutely expendable" when he received the email days after the birth of his first child.

The Los Angeles-based lawyer was working as the Associate Product Counsel for Google for the last six months. Mr Dufau was on parental leave after his daughter was born in the early hours of January 17.

Mr Dufau took to LinkedIn to share the same. He said, "Last Tuesday morning at 2am, I became a father. The next day, my Google teammates showered me with heart emojis and virtual confetti, wishing me well on my paternity leave. On Friday morning at 2am while feeding my infant, I received a notification that I had lost access to my Google corporate accounts. I had been laid off via automated email." He also shared a picture of himself feeding his little one on his company's Slack channel.

stqbd59

He stated that his colleagues said that Google was a company "that treasured its employees" and encouraged him to take the full extent of his parental leave. "And so last week marked the end of my 6 month stint at Google where I worked on a team packed with intelligent, driven, and kind folks who welcomed me into their Google family. They reassured me that the company was one that treasured its employees and encouraged me to take the full extent of my parental leave to cherish this precious time with my family," he stated.

Mr Dufau said that he has been thankful to his team who valued him as a person.

"Every layoff hurts-the timing of this experience, however, not only made me feel acutely expendable, it made me feel naive. Fortunately, many of my former colleagues have reached out with warmest wishes and sympathies, all while they continue to navigate what I'm sure are tumultuous times at Google," the former Google employee added.

He added that his wife and newborn daughter are giving him comfort and are trying to lift his spirits. Concluding the post, he said, "They have shown me that whatever difficulties I may be facing, I still have so much more to be thankful for. #google,"

In the video which has gone viral on social media, Warne juxtaposed his own face on that of Shahrukh Khan's in various scenes from the movie Pathaan. Imran Khan To Run For All 33 Seats In Key Pakistan Polls

Imran Khan, who heads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has decided to contest the by-elections to 33 seats in the National Assembly in March, The Express Tribune reported citing senior party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi. "We have decided to participate in the bypolls and Imran Khan will contest from all seats," Mr Qureshi announced Sunday.

Earlier, on Friday, The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced that bypolls to the 33 seats would be held on March 16. The seats fell vacant after Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf accepted the resignations of PTI lawmakers.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry had already announced earlier this month the party chief's decision to contest by-elections on all vacant National Assembly seats, according to The Express Tribune.

"Tehreek-e-Insaf will contest elections on all the seats and Imran Khan will be the candidate of Tehreek-e-Insaf on these 33 seats," Mr Chaudhry had said in a statement on Twitter on January 17.

Mr Qureshi said people had also supported PTI during the July 17 bypolls, and the party hopes that the masses would once again express their confidence in Imran Khan on March 16 with their votes.

He said that ECP was mandated to hold elections within 90 days after seats become vacant, and it would be a violation of the constitution if they are not held on time.

The PTI leader said they were not in contact with the establishment, according to The Express Tribune.

Earlier in the month, Mr Ashraf accepted the resignations of 35 more PTI lawmakers, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The PTI lawmakers had resigned en masse from the lower house of the parliament after the party chief Imran Khan's ouster from the National Assembly in April 2022.

But, Mr Ashraf had accepted only 11 of the resignations, stating that the remaining lawmakers would be summoned individually for verification.

After stalling the process for eight months, Mr Ashraf, accepted the resignations of 34 more PTI lawmakers and of Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid as the party hinted it would "test" Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with a confidence vote.

Now, the total number of PTI lawmakers whose resignations have been accepted stands at 80, the Pakistan-based news portal said.

The resignations of Haider Ali Khan, Saleem Rehman, Sahibzada Sibghatullah, Mehboob Shah, Muhammad Bashir Khan, Junaid Akbar, Sher Akbar Khan, Ali Khan Jadoon, Engr Usman Khan Tarakai, and Mujahid Ali, were accepted among others.

From the reserved seats, the resignations of Andaleeb Abbas, Asma Qadeer, Maleeka Ali Bokhari, and Munawara Bibi Baloch, were accepted, reported Dawn.

Putin "Threatened Me" With Missile Attack, Claims Ex UK PM Boris Johnson

President Vladimir Putin threatened to personally target Boris Johnson with a missile attack just before ordering Russian forces into Ukraine, the former UK prime minister has claimed.

The apparent threat came in a phone call just ahead of the invasion on February 24, according to a new BBC documentary to be broadcast on Monday.

Johnson and other Western leaders had been hurrying to Kyiv to show support for Ukraine and try to deter a Russian attack.

"He sort of threatened me at one point and said, 'Boris, I don't want to hurt you, but with a missile, it would only take a minute', or something like that," Johnson quoted Putin as saying.

Johnson emerged as one of the most impassioned Western backers of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

But prior to the invasion, he says he was at pains to tell Putin that there was no imminent prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, while warning him that any invasion would mean "more NATO, not less NATO" on Russia's borders.

"He said, 'Boris, you say that Ukraine is not going to join NATO any time soon.

"'What is any time soon?' And I said, 'well it's not going to join NATO for the foreseeable future. You know that perfectly well'."

On the missile threat, Johnson added: "I think from the very relaxed tone that he was taking, the sort of air of detachment that he seemed to have, he was just playing along with my attempts to get him to negotiate."

The BBC documentary charts the growing divide between the Russian leader and the West in the years before the invasion of Ukraine.

It also features Zelensky reflecting on his thwarted ambitions to join NATO prior to Russia's attack.

"If you know that tomorrow Russia will occupy Ukraine, why don't you give me something today I can stop it with?" he says.

"Or if you can't give it to me, then stop it yourself."

Not Going To Be "Cheated Again": BJP On Realignment With Nitish Kumar

BJP workers from across Bihar have been categorically told that there was no question of a realignment with "unpopular" Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the party's state unit chief Sanjay Jaiswal said on Sunday.

He made the averment upon the conclusion of the party's two-day state executive meeting in North Bihar district of Darbhanga.

"We have sought to stamp out rumours among our party cadre about such a realignment. Of course, the CM has the proclivity to oscillate like a pendulum. But we are not going to be cheated by him again", said the BJP leader whose party lost power in Bihar when Kumar and JD(U) walked out of an alliance with the saffron party to stitch together a new one with RJD and Congress.

"Nitish Kumar has grown hugely unpopular. It was his unpopularity that had caused his JD(U) to perform badly in assembly polls of 2020, when we did much better", said Mr Jaiswal.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed magnanimity (udaarta) in deciding to stick to the promise made before elections and Kumar ended up enjoying another term in office. But, the habitual betrayer that he is, Kumar abused the trust reposed in him by PM", alleged the Bihar BJP chief.

Mr Kumar had junked the BJP accusing it of trying to split the JD(U) with the help of his former close aide RCP Singh.

The party has also accused the BJP of an attempted sabotage in the assembly polls when many saffron party rebels were fielded by Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party against JD(U) candidates.

Mr Jaiswal reiterated that the BJP was now aiming at forming its own government in Bihar after winning the next assembly polls and claimed that the tone will be set in the Lok Sabha elections next year in which "we have set for ourselves a target of more than 35 out 40 seats in the state".

Mr Jaiswal also said, tongue in cheek, "today is the birth anniversary of George Fernandes who was a mentor to Nitish. When Nitish did not shy away from betraying him, he can ditch anyone else".

8 Killed, 5 Injured In Shooting At Busy Nightclub In Mexico: Cops

Eight people died and five were injured in a shooting at a busy nightclub in the town of Jerez, in northern Mexico, police said Sunday.

The incident in Zacatecas state took place late Friday into Saturday when heavily armed men, arriving at the bar in two vehicles, burst in and began shooting indiscriminately, a report from the Security Secretariat said.

Six people died on the spot and two more succumbed while receiving medical attention; five people remained hospitalized on Sunday for gunshot wounds.

Victims included club employees, musicians and customers, local media said. Witnesses said people panicked as the club's floor became awash in blood.

The bar, called "El Venadito," is in the center of Jerez, a municipality about 60 kilometers (36 miles) southwest of the state capital city of Zacatecas.

Jerez has been hit in recent years by a wave of violence that last year forced hundreds of residents of nearby rural communities to leave their homes.

Zacatecas state is a strategic point for the US-bound drug trade, which has sparked violent disputes between the Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa cartels, Mexico's most powerful.

The number of people taken ill after allegedly consuming contaminated water in a dozen villages of Nadaun sub-division in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district rose to 535 on Sunday.

People from a dozen villages, including Banh, Jandgi Gujran, Jandali Rajputan, Panyala, Pathiyalu, Niyati, Rangas Chowki Haar, Thain and Sankar have been affected by the outbreak of water-borne diseases.

Rajeev Kumar, the head of Rangas panchayat, had earlier in the day said the number of people taken ill crossed 300. Some patients have been referred to hospitals in Hamirpur.

Two to three people in every household have taken ill after consuming contaminated water provided by the Jal Shakti department, he added.

It is believed that the high amount of bacteria in the water is causing the illness, Mr Kumar said. He attributed it to contamination of the pit from which the water is supplied.

Villagers said the water was supplied without being filtered from an under-construction tank, causing the outbreak.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who is also the MLA from Naudan, has directed the district administration and the Health department to take proper care of the patients and ensure no shortage of medicines and other items.

He has also sought a complete report from state- and district-level agencies.

Health department teams have reached the affected villages to provide treatment to the people under the direct supervision of Chief Medical Officer (Hamirpur) Dr RK Agnihotri.

Officials from the Jal Shakti department have swung into action. It has stopped water supply to the affected villages and sent samples for testing.

Bottled water is being distributed among the people after supply was stopped, said a junior engineer in the department.

Deputy Commissioner Debasweta Banik said essential medicines, ORS packets, chlorine tablets and other materials were delivered to the villages through doctors, health and Asha workers.

Ex Chief Of Cooperative Bank, A Locksmith And Probe Agency

The Maharashtra Police has arrested a former chairman of a state-based cooperative bank and his five family members after an ED complaint they were allegedly obstructing its raids and destroying evidence, officials said Sunday.

The case pertains to an Enforcement Directorate money laundering investigation, linked to alleged irregularities of about Rs 494 crore, against the former officer-bearers of the Pune-based Seva Vikas Cooperative bank including its chairman Amar Mulchandani.

The agency, according to official sources, raided the premises of Mulchandani in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area (near Pune), early morning on January 27, but its team could not get into his house as "no one opened the house." The ED subsequently called in a locksmith who breached the lock, following which ED officials found at least five people inside.

Official sources said the occupants of the house informed ED sleuths that Mulchandani was not there, and their statements were recorded under the sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

ED officials, after about six hours of search, found a servant room inside the premises which was locked and when its keys were sought, the occupants expressed their inability to provide them.

The locksmith, as per the sources, was again summoned and after the door lock was broken, the agency found Mulchandani "hiding" inside this room.

The ED filed a police complaint against all the six people alleging non-cooperation during the searches and hiding/destruction of evidence following which all of them, including two women, were arrested by the local police, they said.

The agency suspects that the former chairman of the bank "erased" chats and cloud data from the two mobile phones allegedly recovered from him.

About Rs 2.73 crore worth of jewellery and diamonds and Rs 40 lakh in cash were recovered from the premises, the sources said.

The RBI had cancelled the licence of the bank in October, 2022.

The bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects, the RBI had said.

Hundreds In Mumbai March Against 'Love Jihad', Demand Anti-Conversion Laws

Activists of right-wing organisations took out a massive rally in Mumbai on Sunday against 'love jihad' and demanded anti-conversion laws and a crackdown on land grabbing in the name of religion.

Leaders and workers of right-wing outfits such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) marched in the rally.

Hindu Jan Akrosh Morcha, organised by Sakal Hindu Samaj, began from Shivaji Park in Dadar in central Mumbai and culminated at Kamgar Maidan in Parel, covering a distance of more than 4 km.

Activists shouted slogans against "love jihad", and demanded anti-conversion laws and a crackdown on land grabbing in the name of religion.

Several leaders and MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and those of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction also participated in the rally.

Police personnel were deployed along the route of the march to prevent any untoward incident.

"Love jihad" is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said last December that the government would study laws on "love jihad" framed by other states and take an appropriate decision.

He had also spoken about a "feeling" in the legislature regarding the Shraddha Walkar case that instances of "love jihad" are seen at a large scale in the state.

"We Are Sorely Missing It": Snowless Streak Puzzles New York

The idea of New York in wintertime conjures up images of Manhattan's Times Square and Central Park shrouded in snow. Not this year.

The city is forecast Sunday to surpass a 50-year record for the latest first snowfall of the season.

It is also close to recording its highest number of consecutive days without any measurable flakes.

The snowless streak has New Yorkers puzzled, some questioning their love-hate relationship with the white stuff.

"It's really sad," said retired teacher Anne Hansen. "Basically, we don't like to see the snow. But now we're sorely missing it," she told AFP.

The Big Apple usually gets its first dusting around mid-December. Last season it arrived on Christmas Eve.

A heavy load often results in "snow days," beloved by children and office workers who gets days off school and work.

Kids grab their sleds and head to the nearest grassy slope. Adults cross-country ski around the main parks.

"You stay home, you drink hot cocoa; it's beautiful and the dog loves it," filmmaker Renata Romain told AFP.

Joy turns to despair fairly quickly though, as the snow turns yellowy-brown, trash piles up on the sidewalk and trips to the launderette become hazardous.

"The snow is pretty to look at the first day, but afterwards it's dirty and I don't like it. It's slushy. It's nasty," added Romain.

Meteorologists define snowfall in NYC as snow that measures at least 0.1 inches in Central Park. Some flakes fell last Wednesday but not enough to count.

The longest residents have had to wait for measurable snow is January 29, a record set in 1973, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

No snow Sunday will mean the longest wait since records began in 1869.

New York is also approaching its longest streak of consecutive days without snow. The current record is 332, which ended on December 15, 2020.

Sunday would be day 326. Accuweather has called the period a "snow drought."

"It's very unusual," NWS meteorologist Nelson Vaz told AFP, saying the global La Nina weather pattern was responsible for keeping colder fronts further north and west.

Up to 40 inches (one meter) of snow fell in Buffalo, New York state, near the Canadian border, in December, killing at least 39 people.

But a few hundred miles southeast, in NYC and surrounding Atlantic coastal areas, the precipitation has meant lots of rain amid mild temperatures.

Only 1932 had a warmer first 25 days of January in New York than 2023, according to Weather.com.

Scientists say climate change is causing winters to be warmer and shorter.

"It's disconcerting," Hansen said of recent balmy days that have felt more like fall.

New York has never gone a whole cold season without measurable snow.

And with February usually its snowiest month, a white blanket could soon envelope the Big Apple yet.

"That's what makes New York, New York, right?" said Romain.

Centre Shows Step-Motherly Treatment Towards State: Telangana Minister

Alleging that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre shows step-motherly treatment towards Telangana, ruling BRS leader and Telangana IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao claimed his party is ready for early polls if the BJP dissolves the Lok Sabha, showing its willingness for early elections.

The BJP-led government has not announced any new institution or funds to Telangana and not even delivered on the promises made to the State in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, he alleged.

"They say 'sab ka saath, sab ka vishwas'. But, their actions are 'sab kuch bakwas' (all rubbish). The value of rupee is moving towards the 'pathalam' (abyss), the debt is mounting towards the sky. Such is the situation prevailing in the country today," he told reporters in Nizamabad.

The NDA government waived off loans for its "corporate friends", he alleged.

"...especially those in BJP in the State, they talk big. If they have guts, let them dissolve Parliament. Then, we can go for early polls together," he said.

The BRS and BJP have been engaged in political one-upmanship ahead of Legislative Assembly polls to be held towards this year-end.

"In 1962...": S Jaishankar's China Dig At Rahul Gandhi On "Territory Loss"

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar today claimed the land that opposition leaders say has been occupied by China "was in fact occupied in 1962", in a reference to the war when Jawaharlal Nehru was prime minister. He also took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently spoke about an official report on loss of territory in Ladakh.

"Sometimes they spread news that they know is false. They project as if it happened just now, when it, in fact, happened in 1962... They won't talk about that," he said, referring, according to news agency ANI, to China's version of events. His "they" reference may have been to opposition leaders' recent remarks too.

On loss of territory, recently Rahul Gandhi was among those who cited a report by a senior police officer in Ladakh that said India has lost access to 26 of 65 patrolling points in Eastern Ladakh. The report was filed at a conference of the country's top police officers in Delhi, attended by PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

But Mr Jaishankar sought to counter it, speaking at the Saturday event in Pune.

"Also, if I would need to know something (on China), I won't go to the Chinese ambassador to get inputs, but to my military leadership," he added, furthering the dig by referring to Rahul Gandhi's 2017 meeting with the envoy when the two countries were in a standoff.

Mr Gandhi had clarified at the time: "It is my job to be informed on critical issues. I met the Chinese Ambassador, (India's) Ex-NSA (National Security Adviser), Congress leaders from NE (North East) and the Bhutanese ambassador."

At the Pune event, the Foreign Minister also spoke about overseas news outlets using adjectives such as "Hindu nationalist" for India's BJP government. "In America or Europe, they won't say Christian Nationalist... these adjectives are reserved for us," he said.

He added that he is proud of it. "If you look at the last nine years, there is no doubt that government and politics of the day are more nationalistic... I don't think there is anything to be apologetic about it," said the minister, speaking in Hindi, at the release of 'Bharat Marg', the Marathi translation of his book 'The India Way'

His comments on foreign media come when there is a row over a BBC documentary on the PM, 'The Modi Question', that speaks about the 2002 Gujarat riots, when he was Chief Minister, and the BJP's allegedly communal politics.

The central government has denounced the two-part docu-series as a "propaganda piece" designed to push a discredited narrative.

In his remarks in Pune, Mr Jaishankar did not speak on this specifically, but said that "everyone in the country is connected with PM Modi during India's G20 presidency".

India has got the headship of the international group for a year as part of a rotation system.

Uncontrolled Construction Caused Joshimath's Land Subsidence, Say Experts

Unplanned and uncontrolled construction in the name of development in Uttarakhand has brought Joshimath on the brink of sinking, experts said on Saturday and demanded that Himalayas be declared an eco-sensitive zone.

In a resolution passed at the roundtable organised by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), experts termed as "inadequate" the steps taken to deal with the prevailing situation in subsidence-hit Joshimath.

They also asked the government to consider taking long-term measures to address the problem, saying a similar situation may arise in Nainital, Mussoorie and other areas of Garhwal as well if the "so-called development driven by human greed" is not checked in the hill state.

"Declare Himalayas as an eco-sensitive zone. Regulate big projects causing devastation," the resolution said. While the width of the road under the Char Dham road widening project must be regulated to intermediate standard to minimize the damage to the terrain, Char Dham railways project should be reassessed and re-looked at, it added.

"Chardham railways is an over ambitious project that will cause much devastation and will further overburden the tourist centric state of Uttarakhand. This project should be reassessed and re-looked at," the resolution said.

A detailed carrying capacity assessment of Uttarakhand should be done to ensure that the number of tourists visiting these places is accounted for and also to ensure that tourist flow doesn't cause environmental overburdening, it added.

The roundtable, organised to deliberate on the topic 'Imminent Himalayan Crisis', was attended by former chairperson of a Supreme Court-appointed committee on the Centre's Char Dham project Ravi Chopra, its former member Hemant Dhyani and others, SJM co-convenor Awshwani Mahajan told PTI.

"Sri Adi Shankaracharya founded the city in the eighth century, where the holy Jyotirlinga is located, which is known as Joshimath (Jyotir Math). Today, this math is at the brink of collapse. The news of the sinking of Joshimath has shaken the whole country," Mr Mahajan said.

"Even though some steps have been taken in view of the current crisis, experts believe that the sinking of this first Jyotir Math established by Adi Shankaracharya cannot be stopped," he added.

Terming the steps taken by the government to deal with the prevailing situation as "inadequate", the resolution noted that while on one hand a large number of people are going to be displaced due to the sinking of Joshimath, on the other, the solution is being sought only by way of rehabilitation of affected residents. "Currently the work on mega projects in this area - the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) hydropower project, Helang bypass road construction which is part of Chardham road widening project and ropeways project, has been stopped by the district administration succumbing to the local protests," it noted.

It can be seen that areas such as Bhagirathi ESZ, where large scale mega projects have not been implemented and the local ecology has not been tampered with, land subsidence, landslide incidents and devastating disaster events are minimum to none, it underlined.

"This is proof enough that the indiscriminate, unplanned robust construction everywhere else in Uttarakhand has directly or indirectly impacted and aggravated the disaster like situation," it added.

It is worth mentioning that the way the mountain was cut at the foothills of Joshimath for the construction of Chardham Marg and how without a proper hydrogeological study, the NTPC dug a tunnel in the middle of the mountain, this fragile mountain was destroyed," the resolution noted.

"It is also noticed that due to robust and unplanned construction of high-rise hotels and buildings, there is inadequate arrangement for sanitation, which makes Joshimath more unstable and burdened," it said.

"Due to all this, today the entire area of Joshimath is sinking and there is no way we can save the same," it added.

In the name of development, the resolution noted, construction work and tampering with nature is going on continuously all over Uttarakhand. Due to the massive deforestation, there is hardly any greenery left on the mountains; and due to this, landslides have become a common feature in these youngest fold mountains, it claimed.

"Disastrous construction in the name of development without assessing the expected impact is becoming the cause of today's and earlier tragedies. This crisis can be avoided only by curbing this indiscriminate construction," the resolution said.

"In view of this type of rapid destruction in the past, it has become necessary to consider that the so-called development driven by human greed cannot be allowed to continue. It is necessary that long-term measures are taken to deal with this problem," it demanded.

China Restaurant Serves Detergent Instead Of Fruit Juice, 7 Hospitalised

Seven customers were rushed to a hospital and their stomachs pumped after a restaurant in eastern China served them liquid detergent instead of fruit juice, according to a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP).

As per the the outlet, the incident took place on January 16 in the Zhejiang province. One of the affected customers, Sister Wukong, was dining along with her family and friends at the restaurant when a waiter brought a bottle of what they all mistook for fruit juice. The woman claimed in a video, which she later deleted from social media, that she and six other people were sent to a hospital to have their stomachs pumped after realising there had been a mistake and that their drinks had a weird flavour.

Gastric suction, also known as stomach pumping, is a procedure that doctors can use to quickly empty the contents of your stomach in case of an emergency.

According to SCMP, the customers were informed that the mix-up was caused by a waitress who had bad eyesight. As per a police officer from the Xucun Police Station, all seven people are in stable condition and will seek compensation from the restaurant later.

The outlet quoted Ms Wukong as saying from the hospital bed, "Let me show you all these people lying here. The seven of us dined together and had to have our stomachs pumped." She claimed her husband took the first sip and informed the group that it had a bitter taste. "I took one sip and swallowed. My throat felt very bad immediately," the woman added.

Later, the waitress acknowledged that she made the error because she was inexperienced and had an eye problem, SCMP stated. Ms Wukong said, "She told us she doesn't normally work for the restaurant and was just helping out for the day."

The outlet further stated that it is unclear what kind of floor cleaner was served to the guests. However, a search on a Chinese online marketplace showed several floor cleaner brands that come in orange juice-like packaging. The packaging is frequently written in foreign languages, which people who don't speak those languages mistake it for some other kind of goods.

He appreciated the increase in the number of girls in the police and paramilitary forces over the years.

"The youth of the country are benefiting from India's defense sector reforms. In the last eight years, the number of our daughters in the police and paramilitary forces has doubled. Today, we see the deployment of women in all three wings of the armed force," he said.

Praising the enthusiasm of the youth, PM Modi said the youth would always be the priority of the country.

S Jaishankar Invokes Mahabharata's Pandavas In Fresh Jibe Against Pak

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said that just as the Pandavas could not choose their relatives, India cannot choose its geographical neighbours.

"It is a reality to us ... Pandavas could not choose relatives, we can't choose our neighbours. Naturally, we hope good sense prevails" said EAM S Jaishankar when asked if "a neighbour and rogue nation (Pakistan), who happens to be nuclear power, will be an asset or a liability."

S Jaishankar was in Pune for the release of his English book "The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World," which has been translated into Marathi as 'Bharat Marg'.

The Marathi version of S Jaishankar's book was released by Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis.

When asked about the economic situation in Pakistan, S Jaishankar said that he cannot comment on what is happening in Pakistan.

The World Bank has slashed Pakistan's economic growth by half -- from 4 per cent to 2 per cent for the current fiscal year, saying Islamabad faces mounting economic difficulties, reported The News International.

"Nonetheless, Pakistan faces mounting economic difficulties and Sri Lanka remains in crisis. In all regions, improvements in living standards over the half-decade to 2024 are expected to be slower than from 2010-19," read the World Bank in Global Economic Prospects report.

Pakistan's economic condition is precarious with low foreign exchange reserves and large fiscal and current account deficits that have been further worsened by severe flooding.

About one-third of the country's land area was affected, damaging infrastructure, and directly affecting about 15 per cent of the population, reported The News International.

Moreover, with low foreign exchange reserves and rising sovereign risk, Pakistan saw its currency depreciate by 14 per cent between June and December and its country risk premium rise by 15 percentage points over this same period.

Amid this Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government has agreed to meet all conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the early resumption of the next review.

Shehbaz Sharif on January 24 said that Pakistan's ruling PDM alliance is ready to sacrifice its "political career for the sake of the country" by accepting IMF's "stringent" conditions to revive the loan programme.

Reports reveal that over 9,000 containers are stuck at different Pakistani seaports, threatening to disrupt the supply chains of essential goods. Inflation in the country has risen to almost 30 per cent. The country's funds are running low and food prices are increasing.

According to Islam Khabar, importers are unable to clear containers due to a shortage of dollars, while shipping companies are threatening to suspend Pakistan's operations over the country's failure to make timely payments. This will negatively impact both imports and exports.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has only USD 4.4 billion in forex reserves, barely enough for three weeks of imports, while the estimated needs to clear the containers and pending requests for opening more letters of credit is in the range of USD 1.5 billion to USD 2 billion, according to the Islam Khabar report.

Businesses in Pakistan are at risk of closure due to a breakdown of supply chains as domestically manufactured goods rely on imported raw materials. The textile industry in Pakistan is also in a critical position as it is losing credibility and market share among international buyers.

Hospitals in the country are running short of medicines, and there may soon be shortages of goods such as wheat, fertilizers, and gasoline.

Prime Minister Sharif has thus asked people to conserve resources such as water, gas, and electricity to assist the government in reducing its import bill, which has risen significantly in recent years.

S Jaishankar also said that the Indus Waters Treaty is a technical matter and future course of action will depend on talks between the Indus Commissioners of India and Pakistan.

"This is a technical matter, Indus Commissioners of both countries will talk about the Indus Water Treaty. We can only discuss our future steps after that," he said.

India issued notice to Pakistan for modification of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of September 1960 after Islamabad's actions adversely impinged the provisions of the treaty.

The notice was conveyed on January 25 through respective Commissioners for Indus Waters as per Article XII (3) of the IWT.

The objective of the notice for modification is to provide Pakistan with an opportunity to enter into intergovernmental negotiations within 90 days to rectify the material breach of the IWT. This process would also update IWT to incorporate the lessons learned over the last 62 years.

India has always been a responsible partner in implementing the IWT. Pakistan's actions, however, have encroached on the provisions of IWT and their implementation and forced India to issue an appropriate notice for modification of IWT.

Highlighting sea-change in India's foreign policy, S Jaishankar said that the country's influence has reached beyond the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

Speaking at the publication ceremony of the book "Bharat Marg" written by S Jaishankar, he said, "Nowadays India's influence has reached beyond the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, this is why I speak on history, big countries always think only about themselves, this is a deficiency in their DNA."

Watch: Ex Pak Captain Sarfaraz Sings at Masood's Wedding. Internet Amazed

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed recently made a successful comeback to international cricket. He played his first Test series in three years against New Zealand recently at home and scored three half-centuries and a ton for Pakistan. After being picked over Mohammad Rizwan in the team, Sarfaraz repaid the trust shown as he scored 335 runs in the two-match series. Wishes and praises poured in for Sarfaraz for his gritty knock in the second Test.

Now in a video, that has gone viral, Sarfaraz can be seen singing a song 'Sada khush raho tum...' at Pakistan cricketer Shan Masood's wedding.

Earlier, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria took a jibe at those who had dropped Sarfaraz from the national squad earlier. "The people who dropped him from the team are hiding their faces. They have now realised that they didn't treat him well. Second innings while chasing is probably the most difficult one, Sarfaraz played the best knock of his career under pressure. He scored runs on a difficult pitch where the so-called world-class batter Babar Azam failed. Against off-spinners, he doesn't have sweep shots and is unable to take charge. And in the end, he gave up," Kaneria said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.

The second and final Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand ended in a draw but not before going down to the wire. Sarfaraz was the ninth wicket to fall. At that stage, Pakistan had 287 runs on the board in pursuit of 319 in the final innings. Abrar Ahmed came in as the final batter and stayed not out with Naseem Shah before bad light forced stumps.

Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

The series ended in a 0-0 draw as none between Pakistan and New Zealand could win a game.

Jeff Bezos' Girlfriend Lauren Sanchez To Lead All-Women Space Crew In 2024

Jeff Bezos' company Blue Origin is planning an all-women crew launch to the edge of space likely by early next year, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Speaking to the outlet, Mr Bezos' girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, who is an Emmy-winning media personality and trained helicopter pilot, revealed the details of the ongoing plan. She said that she is “super excited” to lead five other women for the upcoming mission.

While the names of the crew members remain unknown, Ms Sanchez told the outlet that they will be “women who are making a difference in the world and who are impactful and have a message to send”. She also said that her boyfriend, Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, won't be joining them.

“As much as he wants to go on this flight, I'm going to have to hold him back, he'll be cheering us all on from the sidelines," she said. "I've wanted to be in the rocket from the jump, so [Bezos] is excited to make this happen with all of these women,” Ms Sanchez added.

The launch date is not known at this point, however, Ms Sanchez said that she hopes to fly by early next year. According to The Independent, Ms Sanchez is expected to lead the all-women crew aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard suborbital vehicle which has so far launched six successful crewed suborbital missions to date.

In one of the earlier Blue Origin flights, Mr Bezos, with three other people including his brother Mark and aviation pioneer Wally Funk, travelled to the edge of space. Another New Shepard crewed flight also lofted four people, including Star Trek actor William Shatner and American football player Michael Strahan, to the final frontier. Apart from the flights to the edge of space, Mr Bezos' company has also done a few NASA missions taking up scientific equipment.

However, now, Blue Origin may have to wait for the US Federal Aviation Administration to give the space company the green signal for future New Shepard as one of its recent uncrewed mission in September erupted into a fireball during flight. The space shuttle was caught in flames at about a minute and four seconds into the flight, and in a few minutes, flight abort rockets separated capsules, helping it jettison back to Earth safely.

Back then, the FAA stated that before the new Shepard vehicle can return to flight, the aviation authorities will determine whether any systems, processes, or procedures related to the mishap affected public safety. New Shepard hasn't flown, crewed or uncrewed, since the accident.
